Bar Island Trail

Off to Bar Island at low tide Says Kevin Corcoran
The mile-long Bar Island Trail is an unusual hiking trail because it is only accessible during low tide. The trail, located within the boundaries of Acadia National Park, begins at the northern end of Bridge Street in the Village of Bar Harbor, where the street dead-ends at Bar Harbor (the water, not the village).
At low tide, the departing |
waters leave a 100 yard wide sand/mud bar, thus allowing access by foot to Bar Island. The low tide also provides great opportunities for spotting shells and exploring tide pools.
The traverse between Bridge Street to Bar Island
| is about 1/2 mile long. Reaching the southwest side of the island, the hiker can continue on to the high point of Bar Island via an additional 1/2 mile long gently climbing conventional trail. The high point of Bar Island affords interesting views of the Bar Harbor village waterfront and marina. The total ascent from the water is approximately 160 feet.
