Fred, there are no mountains in the south above timberline. There are mountains with no timber, however.

One of my favs. the signs say most difficult, but that’s really only for the hard parts, the rest isn’t that bad ;)...But for real, bring sunscreen, and I would advise against camping on the balds...Wind is non-stop, and you are completely exposed to whatever random weather decides to show up, albeit rain, snow, or saturating mist.

hiked last week. reminds me of Scottish highlands...above timberline. a little strenuous but well worth the sore leg muscles.

| | Art Loeb Trail is located quite a long drive from Brevard but many people like to hike here to be close to nature. Man, is there a load of exciting stuff to do in the Blue Ridge Mountains. You'll meet a lot of folks from Brevard here; some close by water includes Shuck Ridge Creek. Deep Gap is a glorious place to take a look at nearby, and a short spree to Courthouse Falls is always worthwhile.
In the Blue Ridge Mountains you'll find lots of hiking trails where you can truly take in all the beauty of these mountains. This lake is so wonderful. Get wet |

paddling on Courthouse Creek, and Art Loeb Trail is great enough to spend more than a day at, Cove Creek Campground is a great local campground. Hey, time for a hike don’t you think? if you happen to be in Transylvania County of North Carolina, Art Loeb Trail is a great local trail
| for doing a bit of leg stretching.
Drift down the rapids of Pigeon River - Big East Fork in a kayak, and Bearpen Branch is one of the streams nearby that might be worth taking a look at. North Carolina has so much to offer nature lovers. Art Loeb Trail is a pretty wet place frequently with much rain; throughout the month of July you get the most rain around here, and October is when it's the driest.

Summer at Art Loeb Trail comes with high temperatures in the 80's. When the night sets in temperatures dip down into the 60's. For the duration of the winter highs are regularly in the 40's with temperatures at Art Loeb Trail dipping down into the 20's through winter nights.
