| | There are many hiking trails in the San Juan Mountains where you can truly take in all the beauty of these mountains. Whitewater paddling is not for everybody but if it's for you then we recommend Rio Chama. Bandelier National Monument is a great national park; there are some fine whitewater spots on Rio Grande.

Mitchell Trail is located quite a long drive from Los Alamos but hiking it is great fun any time. You'll in fact wish for more hours in a day to enjoy all the cool stuff in the San Juan Mountains. While you're here at Mitchell Trail you will meet lots of folks from close by Los Alamos; Mitchell Trail is great enough to spend more than a day at, Juniper Campground is a great local campground. Vallecito de los Caballos is a fine location to explore, and a tremendous place to camp here at Mitchell Trail is Las Conchas Campground.
