Blake-Route 73 - Ausable Club

Wooded summit of Blake from Mt. Colvin's south flank
Says Kevin Corcoran

There are a couple of approaches to Blake Peak. There's the secluded approach from the south via the Elk Lake-Marcy trail, or the more popular route starting at the Ausable Club parking lot just off NYS Route 73 that takes you over Mt. Colvin first, another High Peak. This particular trail description covers the route from the Ausable Club.

Blake Peak is the 45th highest
of the 46 Adirondack High Peaks, with an elevation of 3,960 feet. During the late 1800s and through much of the 1900s, Blake's elevation was thought to exceed 4,000 feet - the original threshhold for qualifying as an Adirondack ''High
Peak'' - but modern surveying revealed that Blake is short by 40 feet.

The first 3 miles of the hike is over the gravel-surfaced Lake Road which brings Ausable Club patrons from the lodging area and Club to Lower Ausable Lake. There are actually two points where you can jump off Lake Road to catch the trail up Blake (Mt. Colvin first); I chose the first trail which works its way up to Gill Brook via gentle to moderate grades. After two miles of alternating

moderate to moderately steep pitches from the road, you'll encounter a trail junction with the trail straight ahead taking the hiker up the 4,620-foot High Peak with the blush-inducing name of ''Nippletop. '' You can actually catch a good view of Nippletop about 3/10 of a mile before the trail junction. Going right from this trail junction the hiker has another 1. 1 miles to go to get to the summit of Colvin. This stretch includes the steepest pitches on the approach to Colvin, but there are also segments of gentle grades and even a few flat stretches.

The hiker summits Colvin after six miles of hiking from the parking lot. The views from Colvin's summit (4,057 feet) are wonderful (see description for Colvin).

After enjoying the splendid vista from the top of Colvin, the hiker must continue another 1. 3 miles south to top out on Blake. The descent down the south slope of Colvin is pleasant, with occasional views of the Great Range available to keep your interest. Once you bottom out at the col between Colvin and Blake, you're looking at a moderately steep 0. 6 mile scramble up the wooded north side of Blake. The summit of Blake is also wooded, offering very little in the way of views. I gather that many if not most people climb Blake for the purpose of becoming an Aiirondack 46er (he/she who climbs all 46 Adirondack High Peaks). Although, my understanding is that if you continue south beyond the summit of Blake, you'll catch limited but decent views of the very pretty Elk Lake.

The return trip involves retracing your route, including a climb UP the south side of Mt. Colvin. So, you can make a case that you've actually climbed three High Peaks in one day (Colvin, Blake and Colvin again) if you choose to approach Blake from the Ausable Club. Anyway, the trek to and from Blake equates to a solid day of hiking (10+ hours is typical for the 14.6 mile hike).
