Bonnifield Trail   Bonnifield Trail is designed for winter use only and is a wide path cut through bog. The trail was established to supply the Gold King mining operations near the turn of the 20th century. The land is now owned and managed by US Army Alaska, Ft. Wainwright and is used, among other things, for aerial bomb training. There is UXO (dangerous Unexploded Ordnance) off-trail as signs indicate. Don't bring your dog as this is active trapping grounds for fox and other     small game. Trap locations are not marked and many dogs have been injured in this way. The highlight of the Bonnifield trail is Clear Creek Butte, a 925 elev. ''summit'' with views of the Alaska mountain range to the south. Accessing this trail in the summer would mean finding a way to cross the strong currents of the Tanana river, a river whose surface is frozen and more passable in the winter. The trip from the South Cushman recreation area to Clear Creek Butte is roughly 20 mi. round trip and will reqire more than a day if hiked. By snow machine or cross-country skiing the trip can be made much more enjoyable and brief (a ''plus'' in the harsh negative temperatures of winter in interior   Alaska). Come prepared with supplies for at least two days and know how to use a map and compass. Maps are available on USGS quad C-2 Fairbanks in 1:63,000 resolution. Says Jake Sirevaag Bonnifield Trail is not very near Fairbanks at all but it is one of many great trails in this area.
